If you’ve been looking for the Best VPN for Australian TV and struggled to find reliable information then never fear as I’ve put together the guide below for people in your exact situation.

Australia is often under-resourced when it comes to VPN servers but recently a small selection of the better VPN providers have started to take note and deployed VPN servers throughout the country.

The majority are located in Sydney with a good selection in Melbourne and occasionally a few even in Perth. Regardless of the city, a VPN server in any Australian location will help you watch Australian TV abroad.

So if you’re outside Australia and want to watch Australian TV then one of the following 5 VPN providers will be suitable for the job.

Let’s take a look at the benefits and negatives of each service to help you make a purchasing decision.

1. IPVanish

IPVanish is my number one go to VPN provider for watching Australian TV abroad.

Servers are available in Sydney and Melbourne with a total of over 51 individual VPN servers available.

With one of the biggest selections of Australian VPN servers out of any VPN provider it means you have plenty of choices. Another benefit is it means the servers aren’t overused which can often cause slow playback and buffering, as long as you have a reliable local internet connection then you’re unlikely to experience that.

IPVanish is also one of the fastest VPN providers I’ve tested and in my monthly speed tests comparing different VPN providers they are usually number 1 and on the odd occasion they aren’t they are in the top three without question.

Software is available for Windows PC and Mac. Apps are available for both iOS and Android phones and tablets. There is a selection of set-up guides too that will help you with Linux or routers giving you the possibility to stream Australian TV on an actual TV if compatible.

The monthly cost is US$6.49 when taking an annual service.

2. ExpressVPN

If IPVanish isn’t for you then ExpressVPN is definitely worth considering to watch Australian TV abroad.

Australian VPN servers are available in both Sydney and Melbourne and while ExpressVPN doesn’t publish exactly how many VPN servers they have in Australia I’ve never had a problem with connecting or feeling like a server is overused.

ExpressVPN is a little more pricey than IPVanish which is a bit of a negative of the service. Although they are a little more expensive it isn’t a massive amount and the service will cost you US$8.33 a month when taking an annual package.

Software is available for PC and Mac and apps available for Android and iOS. One of the bonus features of ExpressVPN is they also offer Linux software so you’re mostly covered no matter which system you use.

ExpressVPN also has the option to buy routers configured with their VPN service which will allow you to access Australian TV on other devices like standalone TV sets and systems that don’t usually have VPN access. Buying an ExpressVPN router will obviously cost extra but the option is available if you need.

3. Overplay

If both IPVanish and ExpressVPN aren’t for you then my next choice is Overplay.

Overplay doesn’t quite have the coverage of the previous two VPN services as they only have servers in Sydney, however, they do still have an impressive 39 VPN servers in total which will be plenty to meet demand.

Getting negatives out of the way first, there are no mobile apps for Overplay which means they’re really only suitable for Windows PC or Mac systems unless you have a bit of technical knowledge and don’t mind setting the service up on your mobile device manually.

Now for the positive. Overplay has an additional service as part of their package called SmartDNS. SmartDNS allows you to access Australian TV services (and others from around the world) without using the VPN service which can create speed loss.

Set-up of the SmartDNS service is relatively easy as long as you can follow basic instructions that include just 3-4 steps.

Overplay is more expensive than IPVanish at US$8.33 per month when taking an annual service and they don’t have Melbourne servers but with the advantage of the included SmartDNS service it may be worthwhile considering especially if you have a poor internet connection in your location.

4. VPN.ac

If you’re still searching for the best VPN service for Australian TV and none of the earlier providers have taken your fancy or you just want to check out all the available options before making a purchase then take a look at VPN.ac.

If you’ve previously done some research into VPN providers then you may not have heard of VPN.ac because they’re a lesser known provider. However, don’t let the fact they don’t advertise loudly put you off because they’re one of the better VPN providers out there.

Servers are available in both Sydney and Melbourne and you can expect to get decent speeds too especially on the 1 GBit VPN gateway they offer at both locations.

Price is also a positive of the service and if you sign up for a 12-month service then you can expect to pay just US$4.90 per month.

If none of the earlier providers ticked all your boxes then it’s definitely worth considering VPN.ac.

5. StrongVPN

If you like to shop around before making a choice then take a look at StrongVPN.

Like Overplay, StrongVPN only offers servers in Sydney but don’t let this put you off because Sydney is one of the best connected cities in Australia and this alone will allow you to watch Australian TV outside Australia.

One of the best features of the StrongVPN service is their price. They’re one of the cheapest VPN providers available and the monthly cost will be just US$5.83 when taking an annual service.

Software is available for all devices including Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. I’m not the biggest fan of the Windows software as I find it a little bit unintuitive but thankfully the mobile apps are much easier to use.

StrongVPN certainly wouldn’t be my first choice for watching Australian TV outside Australia and while there is nothing inherently wrong with the service I just feel that you can get a better deal from the likes of IPVanish.

Conclusion: Best VPN for Australian TV

The above selection is some of the best VPN services for streaming Australian TV elsewhere in the world.

My number one provider is definitely IPVanish and when comparing them to the competition they ever so slightly provide a better service.

If you have time to shop around then it’s certainly worth taking a look at the websites of each provider as while there isn’t a massive amount of difference there could be ever so slight variations that are preferable for you such as payment options or terms and conditions.

Noteworthy information

A VPN service will let you watch Australian TV anywhere in the world such as the UK, USA, New Zealand, Asia or anywhere else you find yourself.

It’s worth remembering that not all VPN services are equal and by searching Google you can find yourself with a service too slow to stream video to your location.

If you find yourself with a slow and unreliable local internet connection then it’s best to opt for the service from Overplay and use their SmartDNS system because this will give you the best results if you have a poor internet connection.

Don’t forget you can access all Australian services such as ABC iView, SBS, TenPlay, Foxtel Go, Stan, Presto and any other free services or services that you have a subscription for.
