Looking for the Best VPN for China leaves me exhausted. Sorting through all the misinformation is time consuming.

I’ve been researching VPN providers suitable for China to find the best for the job and in this guide I’ve put together an easy to follow list to save you time and ensure you have all the vital information to help you make a purchasing decision.

There is every need to use a VPN service in China and in my mind it’s one of the most critical countries to use one.

As you’re probably well aware the internet is heavily restricted in mainland China and accessing websites that the majority of the world take for granted such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more is a complete no-no in China.

Thankfully a good VPN service will not only let you bypass the Great Firewall of China but it will also allow you to access all the websites and services that the majority of internet users want to use.

So let’s find out which is the Best VPN for China and other available options.

1. VPN.ac

VPN.ac Small Logo

Without a doubt, VPN.ac is the Best VPN for China.

You may not have previously heard of VPN.ac because they’re one of the smaller providers but don’t let this fool you because they’re dedicated to ensuring that their service works from inside China.

VPN.ac have a dedicated server list available for China which allows users inside China to select from suitable VPN servers and get connected without the fear that the great firewall will block it.

As most VPN provider websites are blocked in China VPN.ac have gone a step further and introduced a dedicated web domain for users inside China which can be accessed here.

Speed is often a factor in China and VPN.ac have you covered with local servers in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and further afield in Australia.

VPN.ac use obfuscation methods on their OpenVPN connections which disguise the traffic and they have a SecureProxy system for web browsing that works great in China.

One of my favourite aspects of VPN.ac is their price. While a monthly package will cost you $9 a month, you can pick up an annual package for as little as $4.90 /mo making them one of the cheapest VPN providers available.

VPN.ac offer software and apps for Windows, Mac, and Android. They also accept local payment methods like Alipay and Unionpay.

2. VyprVPN

VyprVPN Small Logo

VyprVPN makes a great second choice VPN provider for users in China wanting to access a free and unrestricted internet.

One of the best features of the service is their Chameleon VPN mode which is a proprietary VPN protocol based on OpenVPN with obfuscated headers. This allows VyprVPN to disguise your internet traffic which in turn bypasses the great firewall.

The Chinese authorities often use deep packet inspection to look more closely at encrypted communications and if they spot telltale signs of VPN protocols then they attempt to block them. Chameleon was made with this in mind for countries such as China, Iran, and others that are heavily censored.

Unfortunately to take advantage of this special mode you’ll need to sign up to the VyprVPN Pro or above package which on a monthly basis costs a massive $14.99 but can be made a little cheaper when taking a yearly package at just $8.33 /mo.

VyprVPN is bigger in terms of server numbers with VPN servers in over 50 different countries so this might appeal more to you. Local servers to China include Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and a whole host more.

Software is available for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. If you want to use the service on your iPhone or iPad then you’re covered with an easy app, unlike VPN.ac.

3. IPVanish

IPVanish Small Logo

IPVanish recently introduced traffic obfuscation on their OpenVPN protocol which disguises the traffic as normal SSL traffic making them a great choice for use in China.

They offer local servers in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Philippines, South Korea, Japan and a handful of other Asian locations meaning you’ll be able to achieve the best possible speeds while accessing a free internet.

Break through the Great Firewall of China with a VPN.

If you want to access servers further afield then IPVanish are one of the largest with over 60 countries covered.

IPVanish also supports local payment via Alipay and if you want to pay anonymously then Bitcoin is also an available option.

While not as cheap as VPN.ac, IPVanish will set you back $10 per month or $6.49 /mo if taking an annual package which isn’t bad considering the larger number of countries available.

All major systems and devices are covered with custom software for Windows and Mac and apps for Android and iOS.

4. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN Small Logo

ExpressVPN is often rated as the best VPN for China by many other sites, a quick Google search will show this.

While they are a great service and work well in China they’re not the fastest which is why I didn’t select them as my first choice provider.

They do however have an excellent range of VPN servers in 78 countries around the world including servers local and suitable for Chinese use in Hong Kong, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and a whole host of other countries in the region.

ExpressVPN is one of the most expensive providers at $12.95 a month or $8.32 /mo when taking an annual package. Although they are a little more pricey than the other providers they do accept local Chinese payment methods such as Alipay and UnionPay which is great for those in mainland China. They do of course offer a large variety of other payment options.

Software and apps are available for all devices including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Linux so all major devices and systems are covered.

ExpressVPN might be a little more expensive but they do have local payment options and many sites recommend them for use in China so if you don’t mind splashing out a little they could be ideal for you.

5. Overplay

Overplay Small Logo

Overplay round up the selection of providers best for China.

Like the other providers they have a selection of servers based in Asia which will make access as fast as possible from mainland China. Servers in Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and a host of others will all make good choices for Chinese based users.

Overplay offer software for both Windows and Mac but unfortunately don’t have any mobile apps. While Android and iOS will work it will require you to do manual set-up so if you want ease of access then you’re better off sticking with one of the above providers.

A limited selection of payment options is available with no Chinese specific ones provided. If you’ve got access to a major debit or credit card or have a Paypal account then you’ll be able to sign-up, otherwise, you’ll need to look to one of the earlier providers.

Overplay make a suitable provider for use in China but in my honest opinion, you are better off trying one of the earlier listed providers.

Conclusion: Best VPN for China

Choosing a VPN provider for China can be difficult. Unfortunately the landscape for Chinese VPN use changes regularly and what works one day has the possibility of being blocked a day later.

I’ve listed 5 providers that offer specific solutions for China and who are also known to proactively work to ensure their service works in mainland China should issues arise.

VPN.ac in this case are the best VPN for China based on the lengths they go to to enable access for Chinese users. With local payment options and specific modes for China you really can’t go wrong.

If you’re looking for an alternative then VyprVPN and IPVanish also make good choices as they’re geared up for use in China. Failing that it’s worth taking a look at all the providers listed as one may offer a specific feature that you’re after.

Below I’ll run through a few handy hints and tips for Chinese VPN use.

Sign-up before you leave

If you’re visiting China either for a short or long period then it’s essential that you sign-up to a VPN service before you leave for China. Although all good VPN services suitable for China will enable you to access blocked websites it is often the case that the VPN provider’s website itself is blocked in an attempt to stop you signing up.

If you’re already in China then look for alternative access pages for the specific provider. For example, the main VPN.ac website is blocked from inside China like most providers but access is possible by visiting their dedicated vpnac.com domain.

No trouble for using a VPN

The common understanding is VPN use in China is not illegal and there are no widespread reports of any Chinese citizen or those living in China getting into trouble for using VPN services.

In fact, as recently as April 2016 one of the creators of the firewall had to use a VPN in a lecture to access a South Korean website. If a VPN is good enough for him, then it’s good enough for you.

However, bypassing the Great Firewall of China isn’t something to shout about especially if you’re in the country. Once you find a VPN service you’re happy with it’s best to keep tight lipped about it. Rather than splashing it all over social media just tell a few friends who can then pass on the information to their friends.

If too much information gets back to the Chinese authorities about one of the services above working well then it’ll likely they’ll intensify their efforts to block access.

More resources

The censorship landscape changes regularly in China and we will attempt to keep this guide updated as often as possible with providers that work or actively make changes to ensure the service works in China.

Two good resources for further information about blocked websites are as follows.
